Losing his powers may have been temporary only because he's in transition. He didn't finish his training in the FOS (he was warned of grave consequences if he didn't return). We all know that Jor-El knew he would have foes and, also, that he would possess great powers. That consequence could very well be that he didn't finish his training in the FOS and delayed becoming Superman when Jor-El was intending to bring him to that point all the sooner in order to meet the challenges of new supervillains who would put the life of his loved ones in peril (maybe Jonathan could be killed while Clark is helpless to do anything; we all saw how Jonathan was thrown around in the hospital. What if he were killed by a villain while Clark were powerless to save him). Just think of him as going from a caterpillar (teen Clark with some superpowers) to Kal-El now big beautiful red, yellow, and blue butterfly SUPERMAN! :D

Clark (new line at the funeral): All those powers and the things that I could have done if I had only gone when Jor_El told me to and I might have been able to save him! (Spinning around in anger) aaaaahhhhh--aahhhhhaaa aaa aaa... (Clark spins around and runs into the mountains, up to the summit, and finds Jor-El's head hovering holographically in the clouds)

Jor-El: So who's your daddy now? If you had only come earlier when I told you, you could have disobeyed me and the Kryptonian council and flown off from there instead of running and gone on to reverse the planet's rotation, bringing him back to life. Oh well, I guess you're just going to have to save that one for someone else now!

So does everyone agree tha Clark's education that he skipped out on was the final transition into becomming Superman?

The Sage 09-30-2005 02:25 PM

Definitely a great opener and one of the best. I love the exploration of the mythology, the titles were cool. I love the formation of the FOS as well as the glimpses of Tutelage. Smallville's Krypton is like STM's Krypton. My only gripe would be that the fight with the Kryptonians felt anti-climactic, but not even that could touch this stellar episode.

Screencaps later.

I'm not sure. I think Clark will go back to the fortress by next ep. and we'll know better about that. I'm guessing Clark will get his powers back by next episode and perhaps learn a little more?

One thing I'm a bit confused about: Is Jor-el basically over this "your destiny is take over the world" thing? It seems like he's changed his tune without much reason or explanation. I am missing something on that front?

Kryptonsite.com says that he will get his power back by the end of the second episode

I have to say that scene with Chloe and Clark in the hospital was my favorite part of this episode. She has never looked more adorable,
and it is great that clark now knows that she knows about his powers and background. They handled her reaction to finding out he was an alien GREAT. You could see the worry in Clark's eyes when he told her, expecting her to treat him different or be afraid of him. Her initial dialogue seemed to go down that path CHLOE; "...but you look so..." CLARK: "Human?"
But then she tuned on a dime and gave him the reassurance that she was in awe of him and even called him a SUPER HERO!!! I LOVED that. You could see the releif in his face and that he gained an appreciation of how good a friend she is. I was a little surprised he didn't explain that he doesn't tell people becasue he is afraid he will be putting them in danger,
but overall GREAT scene, it literally gave me goosebumps.

I agree with some that the fight scene with the kryptonians was a little anticlimactic, and I was half expecting clark to pull his flying powers out in order to escape the phantom zone portal, but I guess it was OK.

I like seeing the darker Lex, I mean he is Lex Luthor after all, enough with the buddy role.

I really love the nods to STM, the fortress was GREAT, and I almost screamed out of joy and surprise when I saw the Phantom Zone window!
Yes, there are a lot of open questions, but hey that is what the rest of the season is for : )

Later,

Dan

Please black the spoilers out in the future.

I just read a preview for the season over at IGN.com and they said there that Brainiac will indeed be featured in this new season as he was "born out of the spaceship that landed after the meteor shower."

Pretty exciting.

Hell he probably wants half of his storylines back that were hacked by Smallville.

I never watched X-Files when it was on but when I got an overnight job I started watching the reruns on TNT. I've maybe seen 2 or 3 dozen X-Files episodes and was amazed at how many Smallville has blatantly ripped off.

This season has started out to be "legendary". I've loved this show from day one, and now i know for certain that i'm obessed with it :D (seen the season 5 premiere 3 times now . . . and counting :P )

1. I loved the FOS, that whole scene felt like you were watching a new superman movie, it totally kicked ass! :D

2. All the cool references said in the FOS completely geeked me out. Especially the line jore-el says to clark (see my sig)

3. The extra Kryptonians . . . . (yet another sv rule that has been broken . . . hee hee ) At first i was scared to death this would go the way of L & C, but now i'm thanking God lionel told me all i needed to know about those too lol

4. The phantom zone (AMAZING) That was cool to see those two try to toss clark into the phantom zone, for a moment i really did think he'd end up stuck there :P (although i agree with sage, we really should have seen a super-battle or something)

5. Chloe . . . . As must as i dislike her character knowing so much, the scenes between her and clark were well written (although we all know that should be lana)

6. Clark and Lana, a nice, slightly romantic scene between them, hopefully clark will have the balls to tell her his secret this season. (loved the song played in that scene btw)

7. Lois was great and as funny as ever (loved the ursa-ish character choking her, a lovely nod to the S2 movie) :nerd:

8. the mysterious goo man who i know to be brainiac because some people don't know not to type spoilers in the thread titles  :P I really can't wait to see how this goes :D
