You can go on EBAY and buy a Superman Mold. They are so cool. I tried to buy one but was outbidded.

Another alternative is that new technique bakers have to have a photo or image put on top of the cake that is totally edible. Not sure how they make it. It's kinda expensive. But here is the beautiful part of it, you can select any picture may it be a graphic of superman from a comic. They can do it. I want one of those.

You should be able to buy a Superman cake pan. The one I am thinking of that you might like is a Wilton character cake pan. It might be retired, but you should still be able to find one on eBay or at any good cooking store. A cooking store might be able to special order one for you. As for the bakery(ies) that did not have a Superman cake pan--no good baker would just throw out a cake pan unless it was damaged or somehow unusable. More than likely the bakery(ies) that you tried was fairly new and they only saw fit to purchase the most popular kid-oriented cake pans, such as Harry Potter, Barney, Dora the Explorer, etc. But you should still be able to find a Superman character cake. Try a bakery that has been in business for 20 years or more. Or you might just buy your own character pan.

http://www.starshows.com/wilton/

They buy and sell the classic cake pans by Wilton.

Wow... Those are exactly the same cakes that my little brother and I had as kids (he got the Batman cake).
